A Beginner’s Guide to Backpacking: Kennedy Lake

One of my most recent quests was 2 night backpacking trip from Kennedy Meadows to Kennedy Lake and Kennedy lake to the Relief Reservoir. It was a 2 night jaunt with total hiking of about 20 absolutely gorgeous miles! Beware: if you are the emotional type like me, you may cry!

Things I learned:

1. This may seem like a no brainer but adjust your backpack well! There are a lot of straps and each one is vital in keeping you comfortable.🎒

2. Be prepared for a long walk from the parking lot at Deadman’s campground to the trailhead. If you are not on a budget you can pay $15 a night at the packstation. It may be worth it if you don’t want to add an extra mile or so each way.

3. Water is life so come prepared with a filtration system. I was very happy with my Sawyer Squeeze. There are plenty of flowing water sources on the trail. You won’t be disappointed with the clean and refreshing water so drink up.💧

4. The meadow near the lake was very slushy and muddy. Take the high path at the cabin and bring an extra pair of shoes in case.

5. Pack in what you pack out! SERIOUSLY, the trail is prestine, let’s keep it that way. 🌏

6. Pack horses and cattle use/are around the trail so don’t be afraid of a little horse poo or cow patties!

7. If you like trout fishing, you’ve come to the right place. 🎣

8. We saw a bear, you may too! Store your food in a bear canister.

9. Hiking poles are lovely, I wouldn’t go without them. 🥾

10. Put some thought into the food you bring. Be mindful of the amount of space, weight, and trash you may produce.
